Working inside reactors, silos and other confined spaces presents some of the highest risks in industrial maintenance, making careful planning and strict safety procedures essential. Under the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, manual entry should always be considered a last resort. Wherever possible, plant managers should prioritise remote cleaning methods, such as automated 3D rotating jetting heads, which allow vessels to be cleaned from the outside, reducing the need for personnel to enter hazardous environments.

When entry is unavoidable, every aspect of the operation must be controlled through a robust safety strategy. Teams should be fully trained to the Water Jetting Association (WJA) Code of Practice and supported by a dedicated, on-site industrial rescue team ready to respond immediately if required.

A comprehensive Safe System of Work (SSoW) should be implemented before work begins, with continuous atmospheric monitoring throughout the operation to detect toxic, oxygen-deficient or flammable gases. All work must also be carried out under a valid Permit to Work system, ensuring every stage of the shutdown is authorised, monitored and documented.

By combining remote cleaning technology with rigorous safety procedures, specialist training and continuous monitoring, facilities can significantly reduce the risks associated with confined space entries while maintaining compliance and protecting both personnel and plant.
